“I’m the K’NEX of the Castle!”

One of our classrooms has been home to a group of budding engineers today.

Throughout the day, our year 5 children have been working in pairs to create castles made from K'NEX. The session was run in school by Alison Kelly from STEMworks (a business which promotes the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).

As well as working on their communication skills and teamwork the children had to fulfil a brief given to them by Alison. This was to create a castle which had strong walls, a watchtower, the ability to provide a defence for the interior of the building and a drawbridge. The drawbridge needed to open. The children used pulleys to ensure that this happened.

Tyler Jaggers from Elm Class claimed that the work wasn't as easy as it looked, "It looked pretty easy but it was quite hard. I really enjoyed it!" His partner during the challenge, Daniel Wright, also said, "It challenged you to come up with different ideas to make your castle the best one!"
